Rural and critical access hospitals serve over one fifth of our nation’s population and face unique barriers unlike our urban populations. From being the sole provider in an area to being a cornerstone of the community, rural and critical access hospitals are tasked with meeting the needs of all that pass through. As we get into the New Year, we want to start our resolutions off right and understand what new challenges you are facing. Are you just surviving or thriving?
Join us on January 23 for the CAH / Rural Affinity Group kickoff event to share what is working and what needs to be improved to keep your facility moving in the right direction. Come with something to share. Bring a pearl of wisdom from HEN 1 and/or 2, a neat innovation that accelerated or amplified your improvement, or a barrier that stands in your way so that peers can offer their wisdom, solutions and tools. We are all in this together and together we all improve.

Have you identified all barriers and eliminated CLABSI’s in your hospital? Is that a ‘yeah, right’ we hear? Please join us on January 26, 2017 at 11am CT for a highly interactive 50 minute discussion about our challenges, barriers and yes, successes related to CLABSI reduction. We will explore reasons why many are seeing CLABSI reduction in ICU yet not in areas outside the ICU. Why is that? Are we doing something different once the patients leave critical care? We will share some examples from the HEN 2.0 fellows who have worked tirelessly on this improvement area and you will have the opportunity to dig deeper into the ‘how’ since all lines will be open for discussion. Dial in prepared with your list of successes and struggles so we can conclude the session with a meaningful plan for next steps. Hope you can participate in this virtual event!

Since 1816 when a pharmacist's assistant named Friedrich Wilhelm Serturner isolated morphine and named it after Morpheus, the Greek god of dreams, opioids have been used for managing pain. Over the latter part of the 19th century and all of the 20th century, morphine derivatives were the most common form of analgesic administered in hospitals. Now we recognize these opioids cause harm both in hospitals and after discharge.
This begs these questions:
In HEN 2.0 we discussed non-opioid analgesics alternatives. Join us on Valentine’s Day to learn and contribute to our discussion of patient and family engagement as a key strategy for opioid safety and a discussion of inpatient comfort menus for non-palliative care pain management.
